Our History
A tough start
Menzies Nunn Ltd was formed in the autumn of 1981 by Gavin Menzies and David Nunn. Both men had been Directors of The Kynoch Press in Birmingham - one of the foremost British printing houses of the time - so their print credentials were never in doubt.
It was a particularly difficult start recalls Gavin Menzies. “The economy was in the grip of a recession so business was tough enough anyway without all the ancillary problems of a start-up company. For example, our factory heating consisted of one hot air blower which was great during the day but, for safety reasons, had to be switched off when we went home in the evening. Through the night ice would form on the inside of the skylights on the roof and when the blower was switched back on in the morning we would have melting ice dripping all over the factory! All hands on deck covering paper stock with sheets of polythene and placing buckets and any other suitable receptacles in strategic places to try and contain the downpour. Happy days! Looking back I often laugh at some of the situations in which we found ourselves, although at the time it was anything but funny. The company was almost insolvent and hanging on by a thread.”
Better times
Gradually, though, these ‘teething troubles’ were resolved and some positive momentum was starting to happen. New accounts, such as ICI and Central Television, were won and sales were growing strongly. We could even afford to install a temperature controlled heating system in the factory – the hot air blower went in the skip!
With the increased workflow came the need for more equipment and more space. New premises were acquired and a further 4 colour press was installed to keep pace with the increasing order book. Things were looking up.
Onwards and upwards
Menzies Nunn Ltd continues to be a very busy company – we’ve discovered what we do well and we keep on doing it. Methods have changed dramatically over the years but the basic principals of customer care remain the same.
What lies ahead? Who knows? How boring it would be if we knew the future. One thing is certain though – the opportunities will be there for those with a will to see them. It is our intention at Menzies Nunn to continue to provide the best value for money to our established clients and to broaden our customer base by putting across the message that nobody can match our mixture of quality, service and keen prices.
